Maritime career pathways

Deck, engine, and rating careers each have their own requirements and certification steps. BIWD helps you understand the right sequence before you spend money on training.

Start with the right information

Maritime careers involve several steps, and taking them in the wrong order can cost time and money.

Our orientation programmes help you understand the pathway, expected documents, likely costs, and important decision points. BIWD does not issue statutory maritime certificates.

Who provides each document

STCW basic safety training
An approved maritime training institute — BIWD coordinates batches but does not issue the certificate
Passenger ship safety (STCW Reg. V/2)
National Maritime Institute, Madaripur
Certificate of competency
The relevant national maritime administration
Seafarer's identity documents
The relevant government authority
Medical fitness certificate
An approved medical examiner
Employment contract
The shipping company, usually through a licensed agency
BIWD orientation certificate
BIWD — an institute certificate, not a statutory maritime document
Already at sea?
Serving seafarers moving toward cruise and passenger ships should start with the Deck & Engine technical crew assessment. See [conversion & upgrade routes](/programmes/conversion).
Important to know
BIWD certificates are not certificates of competency or STCW endorsements. Always check who officially issues the document you need.

Not sure this is your pathway?

Start with the assessment. It costs nothing and it tells you where you actually stand.
